This week, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice rescinded guidance regarding Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 as it relates to transgender students in schools and educational programs that receive federal funding.
New Leaders is concerned about the message this decision sends to young people and its implications for the school leaders who are responsible for providing all children with safe, supportive, inclusive, and, as appropriate, tailored learning environments.
Failure to provide any child with equal access to their education is unacceptable and it is particularly alarming for transgender students, 75 percent of whom have reported feeling unsafe at school (GLSEN 2015). Policies that ensure all students, including transgender students, are treated equally and with dignity are essential for their personal and academic success.
New Leaders is hopeful that most schools will act in service of all of their students, and we will continue to support the 2,500 teacher leaders, principals, and other school leaders who make up the New Leaders community to advance and support the needs of the educators, students, and families we serve.
