New York, NY—New Leaders, a national nonprofit dedicated to developing and supporting principals and teacher leaders in high-need schools, believes school leadership is essential to ensuring all kids attend a school that prepares them for college, careers, and life. We are pleased that Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act, a much-needed update to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which includes college- and career-ready expectations for all students, maintains transparent and disaggregated student assessment data, and includes provisions to support state and local efforts to develop exemplary principals and other school leaders.
While we support many of the provisions in the new law—especially those that increase support for school leadership—we are also committed to ensuring that the law continues to live up to its civil rights promise. As a nation, we must do all we can to support our most vulnerable students by ensuring that struggling schools are identified and given the support they need to succeed—especially those with the weakest overall performance and those with large achievement gaps. As such, New Leaders calls on states and districts to work diligently during the implementation process to ensure that our most disadvantaged students are accounted for and that all students have access to an excellent education. We look forward to working with federal, state, and local leaders throughout the implementation process and beyond to ensure that every student has the chance to learn in a school led by a highly effective school leader.
