Washington, DC—Today, New Leaders joins a briefing, presented by The Honorable Chris Coons, focused on teacher leadership initiatives that provide teachers with the responsibility and authority to lead instructional improvement in their schools and engage in efforts to elevate the teaching profession.
The event opens with remarks by Senator Coons, who has sponsored bipartisan legislation to build upon innovative state and local teacher leadership efforts by leveraging the expertise of educator preparation programs to design and implement effective teacher leader roles.
A panel discussion, moderated by Kristan Van Hook, Chief Policy Officer at the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, will follow and features:
- Sarah Rosenberg, Senior Director of Policy, New Leaders
- Roberto Rodriguez, President and CEO, Teach Plus
- Chris Coelt, Superintendent, Central Decatur School District, Iowa
- Angel Hardaway, Teacher Leader, Athens City Schools, Tennessee
During the event, Rosenberg will share background on Emerging Leaders, a selective, job-embedded teacher leadership development program offered by New Leaders, along with lessons gleaned from studying the program and its results. (For more, please see www.newleaders.org/untapped.)
Further, she will provide an overview of teacher leadership strategies included in states’ Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plans, based on New Leaders’ ESSA research and analyses. Finally, she will offer recommendations for designing effective teacher leader roles that are tailored to school needs, providing high-quality, job-embedded training and support for teacher leaders, and creating the school conditions and policy context necessary for teacher leaders to effectively lead their colleagues and students to success.
